E-commerce is a primary example of where a truly rich Internet application makes sense. An improved customer experience that occurs with the use of an RIA typically results in higher checkout numbers - in terms of the amount that people buy and the number of people who successfully checkout.

Here are a few examples of rich Internet application e-commerce sites that I think have done things right. The first is a large company. Very large. Nike has recently redone their nikestore.com website to feature a Flash based online store, complete with product searching, shopping carts and checkout. All in one easy to use, visually appealing website.

The second is one that was recently sent to me, but that I also found on Mark Piler's WebORB blog, and is a great example of not only using Flex to create a compelling e-commerce website, but also the fact that Flex can connect to a variety of backends, not simply Java. The Australian retailer BCF uses Flex for their online store. The application was built using Adobe Flex and WebORB for .NET.
If you're looking for your own Flex based store, and don't want to write one yourself, you may want to check out ZoomFlex. I haven't tried it myself, but it appears to be an online Flex store that you can customize to meet your requirements.
Are you aware of any other sites that use Flash or Flex in an e-commerce setting?

I was looking at the Nike Home Page and it changed
I was looking at the Nike Home Page and it changed as I was rolling my mouse over some of the items.
I guess of the three "tabs" they have, they are set to cycle after a length of time. Of course, it cycled as I was rolling my mouse over the items, trying to figure out what they were.
It's easy to complain, I know. ;)
The cart portion did seem cool. Are there any statistics available on either of these sites about how the use of Flash increased sales?
Not that I know of
I don't know of any stats on these sites specifically about how the use of an RIA increased sales. I'll try and ping them to see what I can find.

ZoomFlex Store
Thanks for the ZoomFlex plug Mike, as is Murphy's law anyone who was trying to view the store from your link above today would have received an error as we were in the middle of upgrading the store demo . If they go to our Flex Store homepage and try now then the new demo is up.

Currently the ZoomFlex store has base store functionality in that you can add/edit products, filter searches etc. and pass everything to a secure payment gateway. Early in the new year we are looking at releasing an upgraded version which includes membership , specials and a host of other features for anyone who is interested.
Great news
