Buying a New Car and Care About the Environment?

Send to friendPrinter-friendly version

MPGGenie is a Flex and ColdFusion powered application that allows car buyers to estimate the daily, weekly, monthly and yearly gas costs for new cars. Visitors can input a number of variables, like the number of days they drive to work, commute distance, cost of gas. The application will then calculate the total cost of gas for the car by day, week, month and year. Users can drag and drop cars to a seperate section to compare models to each other.

The site also contains pages with specific gas information for the cars, along with a calculator that allows you to figure out the cost of gas for that specific vehicle. For instance, here's one for the Civic Hybrid.

I can think of two ways that the Flex application could be improved: first, allow users to switch between imperial and metric (who measures things in gallons or miles anyways!), and secondly allow users to filter out the list of cars by keywords. Other than those two small things, this is a really useful application - it shows gas use in a format we can all understand - estimated costs for various time periods.

Cute Slider...

Nice little application :) And nice slider! I never thought the slider thumb can have a skin. Have tried it. It's Cute!!!

Gallons & Miles

"who measures things in gallons or miles anyways!"

99% of the UK ;)

Improvements

They could have integrate some data visualization instead of just using Datagrids and skin/style the thing so that the color and style matches their main site, not just greeeeeeeeey.

No good for UK visitors

A nice app but too bad the $ per gallon slider doesn't go up to $7.88. Yes, that's the cost in the UK. About 80% of it is pure tax.... which is not reinvested on our deteriorating road network, nor on the railways which can cost $150 to travel 150 miles. ColdFusion is more expensive over here too. Irony and cynicism, however, is cheap and abundant. ;-)

Feedback

I am the developer of mpggenie.com. Thank you for the excellent feedback. Very helpful. An update is in the works.

Thanks!
